Any chance you’re headed to Portland?

Fuck those things. I drove one from Chicago to Minneapolis (severely hungover) and it was awful .

(Shhhhh !!)

but yes, it didn’t help.

Overall I’ve driven box trucks that size probably 15 times and I hate it every time. Once the novelty of driving something gigantic wears off (after about 5 minutes), it’s just noisey, NVH ridden, slow, monotony.

I love how U-Haul has to label every single mundane part of their vehicles as some sort of branded feature.

Was amused to see that video footage of the “peaceful protestors” unloading the gear out of the back of a U-Haul the other day...

apparently the Law School Grad woman that rented the truck forgot that, armed with the plate number, the Feds could track down the rental location, the renter, the renter’s credit card number... the renter’s phone records and the renter’s source of funds...

BTW, all those trucks now also have GPS tracking and nannies, so you be safe out there.  Check out Multnomah Falls!

These trucks are so much better with a diesel, but U-Haul likes lower upfront costs of a big gas motor, simpler maintenance and not having to deal with a customer mistakenly filling up with the wrong fuel. Fuel economy  and overall engine lifespan is of no concern to them.

Probably more Russia-funded deplorables from points east who have been streaming to the west coast, operating under a false flag and/or looking for a fight.

Only slightly joking.

As a European these ( the engine,  the non cabover form factor and their look) are an abomination.

But they are also really big. The smaller ones don’t have that big old good. I do wonder about the hood because I’m fairly sure you could get the Triton V10 in significantly smaller vehicles.

I remember helping my friend move an absolutely absurd quantity of soaking wet lumber and cinder blocks in a Ford van based E350 and the front wheels briefly gained about 10 degrees of camber. He should have rented one of those instead. But then your reasonably valid point comes in. The same wouldn't have missed up a similarly sized Isuzu NPR as badly.

Oh, there’s likely some of that.

In the case I’m citing, they traced the money back to a group most decidedly NOT that though .

I’m not dismissing the False Flag thing BTW. That mess in Minneapolis is pretty certain to put the whole state into the (R) column in November... strategists certainly understand that.

You forgot to divide fuel saver by F650(1 + displacement).

We just turned one in, and my dad was pleasantly surprised compared to Uhaul trucks of old. Loaded to the door, plus towing the LS430, it would easily do 75 unless you got to a hill . Even then, it would maintain 70 pretty well. It made following it much less unpleasant.

There’s definitely some of that. Who is paying for these outsiders to come into cities from outside areas, looking for fights with antifa and calmer protesters alike? Tons of it in the PNW, not unlike the one who was shot in Portland not long ago (the shooter then effectively executed by our brave praetorian warriors as he took down one of their sympathizers) , and plenty of non-locals streaming into Seattle-area cities when things get hot, too.

Nothing like striking fear in people who are already afraid and not against leaving the TV on FOX News all day.

I am sure MN will be just as tired from all the winning in 4 years as they are tired from it now. So much winning, so much exceptionalism.

There’s some reasons for North American commercial trucks generally non-cabover form factor. We generally don’t have the size constraints of more densely built cities, so there tends not to be much motivation for a shorter overall vehicle. Longer wheelbases also have stability advantages at higher speeds and s itting between axles on the tractor instead of on top of one lends itself to a more comfortable ride experience. It also lends itself to more aerodynamic profiles, and especially out West where many states have trucks running 75 or 80mph speed limits.

I grew up out there and, as I posted indiscreetly on the FP the other day, that whole “Minnesota nice” thing is largely a facade.  There’s a lot of resentment burbling under the surface... and aimed at lots of different groups.

I think a uhaul box truck is sill the biggest thing I’ve driven. I was moving and my civic wasn’t gonna cut it this time since I finally had furniture lol . it’s wild that anyone can just go get one for the afternoon.

Yep, it’s like “ southern hospitality” , which is often doled out with snark or used as a thin veneer.   Judging by the last election, there’s a lot of resentment in the upper midwest as a hole.

At least here in the PNW, we are cold and standoffish, and proud of it.

It is totally wild. For our last move, I rented an Isuzu NQR cabover with a 16' enclosed bed and a 6.0L GM V8. It wasn’t bad to drive, though  you constantly have to remind yourself of how much space you take up. But, the thing I found most absurd was its party trick: the electric liftgate. There were several ways that you could lose a finger or a toe if you aren’t careful with the liftgate. There are no sensors that check if you are about to crush a body part with the liftgate. I used the liftgate slowly and carefully, but I was worried about hurting myself. If you’re tired or distracted while operating it, you could earn yourself a trip to the ER quite quickly. Also, the liftgate was LOUD. Like, “sorry I woke you up, neighbors” loud.
